We are now in the "reading week" before exams.
So many great contributions have been made to the Wiki!
The following is not a comprehensive list of all of the great things in this Wiki,
They are just
a few of my favorite things. Stuff that made me laugh, cry, and think:
The Mum, The Kid, The (Stay at Home) Dad . . . ROTFLOL
A broad range of different gender experience and systems ("Third Genders"):
Sworn Virgins of AlbaniaFafafini of SamoaMak Nyah in MalaysiaAs well as other "Gender Benders":
Shingo Mama in JapanGrae Phillips in AmericaAn very powerful video of
older women preparing a very young woman for marriage.
The video was shot among
Himba of Namibia.
However, such situations are extremely common and found worldwide.
It raises extremely important questions about who exactly 'enforces' patriarchy, and why?
Thoughts regarding "transnational patriarchy" including a clip on
Vietnamese Foreign Brides in Singapore.
Women Only Public Transportation raises important questions about gender segregation.
A general liberal view is that segregation is necessarily discrimination and necessarily wrong.
A general conservative view is that segregation appropriately keeps women (and men?) "in their place."
But women only public transportation schemes are supported by feminists and instituted for the benefit of women.
A similar argument is made by Muslim feminists that veiling and purdah are forms of protection.
This is an open and important debate (with no easy answers).
Also related: Are "
Pink Parking Lots" here in Singapore flattering or demeaning?
A very thoughtful
Discussion of Islam and Gender.
Thanks especially to s_huseinah for sharing her reaction to the film and personal experiences!
A thoughtful contribution on
Women, Islam and Culture was also contributed by norahsyikin.
With regard to "Sexual Exchange Theory"...
Chimps also swap "meat for sex". (I wasn't aware of this particular research previously)
A summary (in video and text) Jean Killbourne's arguments on
The Sexual Exploitation of Women in Advertising (with an inspriational ending!)
Nice page of
Iconic Women in American CultureAnybody recall Rosie the Riviter and Mary Tyler Moore from Lectures?
Children and gender stereotypes - a first hand perspective!
But
not all children hold these stereotypes.
Finally, a few "classics" (stuff I'd used or seen before, but posted here by course participants):
The Dove Beauty Real Beauty CampaignAnd the "
Slob Evolution" Parody of the Dove Commercial.
As well as other
Critiques of Dove.
A funny video contrasting
typical masculine and feminine behaviors.
Perhaps
the most beautiful song ever recorded about the dilemmas women face.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Wiki and made this a great course!
