Welcome to the Wiki for SC2220: Gender Studies.
This course is an introduction to Gender Studies.
It is offered by the Department of Sociology at the National University of Singapore.
It is also the core course for the Gender Studies Minor at NUS.

The Wiki is an integral part of the course.

All participants in the course are required to contribute to the Wiki.
Think of the Wiki as a collective set of class notes and commentary on the course.

For some highlights from the Wiki in 2009 see: A Few Favorites
For highlighst from the Wiki in 2011 see: Favorites 2011

The instructor for the course is Dr. Eric C. Thompson (a.k.a. socect).
The tutors have been Dr. Reiko Yamagishi (2009, PhD 2010!) and Ms Lynette Chan (2011).

Other Recommended Wiki's for Reference:
Anthropology and the Human Condition (Wiki for SC2218, NUS Course on Anthropology)
Gender, Culture and Society (Wiki for graduate course in Gender Studies, SC6214, Sem 2, 2008/2009)

An important inspiration for the Wiki as a platform for participatory learning comes from the award winning lecturer in anthropology at Kansas State University, Michael Wesch. If you want deep background on the ideas behind 'peer-to-peer' participatory learning see the following: "A Portal to Media Literacy"
(For those of you who just can't get enough of university lectures! Haha)

teehedgewhye Common Gender Stereotypes 14 Mar 19 2012, 10:04 AM EDT by reachup

This website had a headline that caught my eye.
These stereotypes might contain some truth in them, and I am going to elaborate on a few.

1. Women are bad drivers.
This is a common view, but is this reliable? In bid to find out the correlation between gender and road safety, a hypothetical analysis (Schneide, 2004) was conducted. If being asked "who would be a good driver", answer would be to compare the ratio of the different gender, and people would say that men are indeed better drivers. However, if the question was twisted to "who would be a worse driver", it might not be female, as a different set of numbers would be looked at. Not being a good driver does not equate to being a bad one. It is important to look beyond them. And not be too quick to judge.

Stereotype 2: Men can better tolerate stench than women.
Is it really because of the innate nature of women that formed this? Studies had shown, females are more receptive to smell to better aid them in domestic chores. This is somewhat linked to the hormonal change during menstruation, improving their sense of smell (Brown & Amatea, 2000). Women are indeed better in identifying body odours.

Stereotype 3: Women love to talk.
Generally, men are thought to be the straightforward, while women, the complex ones. Statistics had shown that on average, a woman speaks about 20000 words a day and a man, about 7000 (Johnson, 2009). However, this cannot represent the masses. Whether or not a man or woman likes to talk depends on an individual. It is believed that the statistics was based on the ground that guys tend to be silent when thinking, while females prefer to voice out their emotions.

Therefore, I feel that, such stereotypes still vary from individual, and cannot be an accurate judgement on the majority.
